The bidding for our favorite auction, the Studio Art Quilt Associates Benefit Auction,* starts on September 9, 2022. As in years past, Deb and I are making our dream collections. Click here to view Deb’s collection. This year eight pieces make up a collection. My tastes run the gamut, but this year I kept returning to view pieces that included squares. Why? I love the humble square, the basic building block, and the following artists used the square to great effect.
Chiaki Dosho – The Glistening Light
I’ve always admired Chiaki’s use of small snips of fabric, and I really like the way the light falls on this piece. I may be cheating here since all the quilts are 12″ squares, but the dramatic black background really makes this piece look “squared.”
Michele Hardy – Gems #25
I love how the quilting and the background work to highlight the squares.
Susan Lenz – In Box CDXVII
It’s not just the colors but Susan’s choice of materials that keep me intrigued.
Holly Brackmann – Naughts and Stripes
Yeah, the title may point the viewer to the circles and stripes, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the squares and how they were created with rectangles.
Denise Paglio – It’s Not All Black and White
While Denise was attempting to show all the blood that has been spilled in mass shootings this year, I was drawn to the different squares that were represented here: the squares in squares (targets?), the tick-tack-toe squares, and of course the red square in the center.
Therese May – EQUALITY A-Z
Squares in squares in squares. A piece that is truly squared off!
Susan Piernan – Together We are Stronger
The interwoven strips showcase the humble square to great effect.
Cynthia Levis – My Favorite Things
Cynthia states that circles are one of her favorite shapes, but what I find so fascinating are the indigo squares below the circles.
These are just some of the quilts that I really like. (I have another dream collection in my head that focuses on architecture!) Maybe you’ll find a piece to bid on. You can even bid on our piece, Rainbow Trout # 2.
*All proceeds of this auction help support SAQA’s exhibition programs, publications, and education outreach. Plus, your purchase helps increase the recognition for art quilts and the artists who make them, like the Pixeladies.
