Wanna get away? Why not join me at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida for Focus on Fiber? I’m going to be teaching a 2-day workshop on Improvisational Upcycling with T-shirts, April 7-8, 2019.
What is Improvisational Upcycling?
Improvise: to make or fabricate out of what is conveniently on hand; to make, invent, or arrange offhand
Upcycle: to recycle (something) in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item; to create an object of greater value (from a discarded object of lesser value)
Get some second hand t-shirts. Take them apart. Put them back together with a healthy dose of laughter and hand-holding. I’ll be teaching you how to create easy-fitting, truly wearable art by upcycling inexpensive thrift-store knit t-shirts into a unique and comfortable dress or top. If you are apprehensive about sewing with knits, this is just the class for you. I’ve got all kinds of tips and tricks. Check out this video for some of my creations.
But wait, there’s more! I’ll be staying on for the self-directed (do your own thing) retreat through April 12, so I can help you with fitting and finishing your project should you decide to extend. And if you need another reason, Kris is going to be my helper. So you will get the full Pixeladies experience.
What do you need to bring?
Your sewing machine, some t-shirts, and thread. Oh yeah, bring basic sewing supplies like shears, pins, measuring tapes, and seam rippers. I’ve warned Kris that she can only bring one suitcase. Her second one will be full of our t-shirts that you can mix and match with your own. The plan is that we’ll have a serger on hand for you to test drive. I know you all need another type of sewing machine to experiment with.
What about accommodations?
You can reserve a private room, complete with your own bath and refrigerator. The rooms are big enough to hold wine gatherings, yet when you close your door, you are in your own world. Room and board “on campus” is $160 per night while you are taking a workshop, and $235 per night for the retreat. Yes, that includes meals. Speaking of meals…
What about food?
Three meals a day prepared by our personal chef, Tom. As our fearless leader, Mary McBride, says, “You might gain weight at the retreat but there are many steps to take between studios, private rooms, and the dining commons where the meals are provided. So you’ll have to work hard to keep the pounds on, and there are fat-wheeled bikes available to help work off the special desserts.”
What’s the weather like?
Spring is always a surprise in Florida. But, we promise, there will be NO SNOW, and it’s too early for hurricanes! Bring a sweater as well as shorts, tank tops and swimsuits, if you intend to head to the beach. An umbrella could come in handy. Linens and towels are supplied but you might want to bring your favorite pillow.
