It’s getting to be that time of year again. Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) holds an auction of amazing 12″ x 12″ art quilts in September. This year it goes from September 14 through October 7, so mark your calendar! In addition to seeing all the quilts, you can view members’ dream collections of six quilts.
Jurying my collection is one of the hardest but also most fun things I do all year. But this year was really hard, perhaps because it’s hot and smoky with much of California on fire. Either I loved looking at cool blue colors or dusty, smoky pinks. So this year I present not one, but two, collections.
The Blues
I love the combination of blue and brown. Before I even opened the page, I said to self, “Choose a blue and brown collection this year.” As I was perusing the quilts, one of the first images that caught my eye just happened to be blue and brown. It was Judith Ahlborn’s Leaning Tower of Pisa Close Up. (Let’s not get started on the inequity of alphabetical lists). So off I went on my search for blues and browns. Then I got to the Ks, and I thought I had a subject-based theme as well. Work. (Workers, gears, buildings.) But choosing the final quilt was hard. Lois Wilby Hooper’s Beside the Seaside fit perfectly. So forget about work and just enjoy the lovely colors. Click on any image to enlarge it.
Smoky Pink
When I got to the end of the list, I saw Libby Williamson’s Tea Bag Refreshed. I just love Libby’s work, so I had to build another collection around her piece. This is where the smoke was sending me subliminal messages. These art quilts look like the sky that’s outside my window—not so nice when it’s because of smoke, but beautiful together on a wall. Enjoy the pinks.
